Our Procedures

Sleeve gastrectomy (aka gastric sleeve)

At Brighton Bariatrics, we mostly perform the sleeve gastrectomy procedure for eligible patients. This procedure involves removing a portion of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-like shape, similar to a banana. This reduces the stomach’s size, limiting the amount you can eat.

The procedure is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and takes about 2 hours to perform with a 2 night stay in hospital. Like any type of weight loss surgery long-term nutritional supplements and monitoring is important after this type of surgery.

5-10 year follow-up studies over 10 years indicate that average weight loss is about 50-65% and that the safety profile of this operation is very good.

Gastric band resurrection/ revival and removal

We do not recommend patients have gastric banding as a new procedure due to high complication rates that can occur, but we can offer different support and options for you if you already have one in place.

If you would like to get it working for you again, or to check its position if you are experiencing problems (e.g. food getting stuck, pain during/after eating, persistent vomiting, weight gain) then our team will assess you to see if it is more appropriate to either fix or remove the band.

If you would like it removed or are experiencing complications from the band, it can be removed using keyhole surgery. This typically involves an overnight stay in hospital. It is also possible to have a conversion to a sleeve gastrectomy after a gastric band removal at a late date (usually around 6 months after band removal).

Non-surgical option: Gastric Balloon – ORBERA365TM

A gastric balloon is a very effective and popular non-surgical way to help you kick start weight loss. It works by reducing the amount of space in your stomach so that you feel full eating a much smaller quantity of food than usual. With proper dietary and lifestyle changes, you can expect to lose 20-30% of your excess body weight.

We use the ORBERA365TM gastric balloon which can safely stay in place for one year. The balloon is inserted via your mouth to your stomach using a camera called an endoscope, which means there are no scars or stitches required. After a year the balloon is then removed using the same method. Both procedures can be done under local or general anaesthetic.

Once your balloon has been successfully removed, we provide you with support and guidance but we also advise the mindset for a healthy smaller portions and regular exercise continue, helping you to continue your weight loss journey.

Other weight loss options

There are a number of alternative procedures or methods for weight loss. If our specialists think it would be more appropriate than any of the methods above, we will make sure you are signposted to get the support you need.
